  • NC S/C CARB updates?

Tom, do you know if anyone is chasing CARB approval for the NC now that the ND is on it's way?

I need a coldside on my '08 ASAP. I'm ready for that low to mid-range torque for autocross
'99 and '08 MX5's both set up for autocross. '99 goes to track days now and then too. They take turns driving me to work.

My apologies, Tom. I see you are the only person to ever look at my profile and I rudely (accidentally) had never put any info in. Oops. Info added along with a snappy avatar.

And since I asked the question about CARB approved S/C for my NC... there appears to be only 1 kit available, no matter who's packaged it? The Cosworth/Moss/Flying Miata/Goodwin Eaton/Magnuson unit. Is that correct? They are the same kit with different engine management?

Does this S/C use the same boost bi-pass as the NA/NB versions?

I am pretty sure the Moss and Cosworth are different. They both use the MP62 but, I am pretty sure, the similarities stop there. I doubt either company is going to chase CARB. The names you mentioned are either selling the Moss or the Cosworth.

I wish I could help but the 11:1, or there about, compression scared me off. I was also worried that Ford didn't build that engine as strong as Mazda built the 01-05 engines.

We had one of the Moss test cars here for a couple months. We tested it and it was pretty good. Bill ran it on dyno and played with settings and there was a lot more HP to be had BUT!!!!, we set it back as delivered and called it a day. We both think we could take the knowledge we gained from the FFS kit and turn the power up but I wouldn't sleep nights unless the engine got stronger pistons and rods. 9.0:1 CR wouldn't hurt either.

CARB would be a different story. In 2004, California turned the screws tighter on emissions. I think I could do CARB again today and pass that requirement fairly easy. However, from 2004 to today, I would guess the standards have changed again a couple times. What CA really wants is all electric cars and the electricity to charge them to come from other states so CA can be emissions free. They try to call it "emissions FRIENDLY". No comment.

        Thanks for your input Tom

It may be a moot point without CARB for my car but....

Would you be concerned to run an NC hard with the Moss kit as delivered or at least with other reasonably mild programming or best just not to boost the stock Ford motor?

I wouldn't be concerned with the Moss kit. I believe it makes about 5PSI boost. The Cosworth kit is much higher boost. More force at work on the roids/pistons.

Caveat: This is just my humble opinion and subject to change by those who think differently.

Just my opinion but I would leave a NC as stock as the only company here in the UK to sell a supercharger kit for the NC say a requirement for fitting is and engine rebuild first!

Cosworth no longer sell over here as it cost them too much in engine rebuilds and one new car!

Unfortunately, the only sure way to know where the limit of power is, is to break a couple of engines at the same torque. That may be more expensive than getting CARB (but, then maybe not).

Steve, they did that already. Cosworth bought a few engines. The Moss kit is very different. It is low boost and has an injector spraying fuel. Kind of like...

All good points. And as far as I can tell Cosworth still sells their kit. They just put other peoples name on it and don't provide engine management.

I would go for a Moss if it were CARB but as it sits now... looks like I'll just keep the '08 normal aspirated (full STR package) and boost the '99. I can't seem to part with the old gal anyway. She's just too nice a car.

I know what you mean about the 99. I still have my 99 10AE. It is stock except for the CS Racing Beat front sway bar. However I have been looking at an STR NC. We'll see.

                      Moss SC link?

Anyone have a link to some sales info on the Moss NC SC? Good-win still has a minimal bit of info on it on their site even though Brian doesn't seem carry it any longer. Is this kit even for sale anymore?

I already read a few pages of owner experiences on miata.net.

Wow! I perused the Moss site. No 06+ superchargers could be found. I'm shocked. Did I search wrong?

Yup, that's what I see too. Perhaps it was more trouble selling and servicing the kit than it was worth in profit? I'm sure you know how difficult it is to deal with clueless masses of people wrenching on their own cars. That's who seems to have posted most on miata.net of their experience with the Moss kit. Seems Good-win, BEGi and Flying are still selling the Cosworth with different reflash vendors for engine management.

I'll talk with Brian Goodwin this weekend at the races and also shoot an email to Moss just for my own curiosity.

All I can say is if you are into form over function, the Cosworth kit is gorgeous. My drawback is that I wouldn't use it on stock internals.
